Req. Nb ID Description Source Areas Dependencies Status Date
JM9 76 In order to permit the Client to perform client-directed processing of submitted Activities (for example client-directed data staging), the Execution Service SHOULD manage 'Hold' points for Activities.  Fault if not supported. Strawman functionality Activity Management Conflicts with JM8 Proposed 2010-03-18

Etienne Urbah's position on 2010-03-18

  • 'Client-directed processing of submitted Activities' is a Use Case existing for historical reasons, when Data Management was underestimated
  • This Use Case is contrary to the principle of 'Full Automation of Processing'
  • This Use Case generates 'Hold' points for Activities, which have to be implemented in 'Hold' states inside the State Model, and make this State Model very complicated
  • 'Manual Data Staging' can easily been replaced by 'Data Pre-Staging' and 'Data Post-Stating' to and from Storage Resources (GLUE StorageService), occurring OUTSIDE the life time of the Activity, plus Automatic Data Staging specified inside the JSDL
  • IT experience shows that 'Execution of Activity' is only a little part of 'Data processing', which must begin with careful 'Data Management'
  • So I consider this Use Case as NOT belonging to good practices, and I vote AGAINST this requirement
