Introduction

The NML-WG goal is to define a schema for description of optical hybrid network topologies. This schema is to be used by lightpath provisioning application to exchange topology information intra and inter domain. This document constitutes the deliverable 2 of the working group. It provides the first schema developed by the working group.

Topology objects

Core ontological classes are defined by the abstract class NetworkElement, the following are its subclasses:

• Group
• Node
• Port
• Link

Other classes

• Service

Common ontological classes:

• Location
  
• Name
  
• Identifier
  

We have also defined the concept of View. A View is an instantiation that provides the abstraction of the network tailored to the requesting party needs: i.e. a user application trying to make a request for a lightpaths will require different information than an inter-domain control plane tool trying to setup this path. This concept implies that our schema has different policy levels, with varying depths of internal exposure.
