Title: (321) Persistent Archive Concepts
Description:
The preservation of data is a difficult task that requires management of technology evolution and authenticity, while
ensuring that risk due to catastrophes is minimized. The mechanisms provided by data grids for interoperability across
data management technologies provide part of the required infrastructure. The ability to apply archival processes for
the generation of archival forms of digital entities is supported by virtual data grids. This paper specifies the
minimal capabilities that should be provided by virtual data grids to enable the creation of persistent archives that
hold data for lifetimes greater than that of the underlying software technologies.

This document is the main result of the Persisten Archive Research Group. It would best fit into the recommendations
track, but as I understand recommendation docs cannot be submitted by RGs. So I am somewhat unsure where to put it.
Possibly Community Practice would be appropriate? Any advice would be welcome.

DOC and PS versions are available on request. .

I have looked at the public comments

There were three.

One asked to use it as a basis for some external work. The others said it was a useful document.

This document is clearly fine - and should now be published.
I.e. i.e. approve movement to publicaiton

The Data Area editorial board has been formed, and will
review the modified document quickly.

Planned timescale is < 2 weeks.

It is noted that this looks like an overly long delay for this document, but SG members should be aware that we are trialing a systematic way of
ensuring all documents have AD/Area review before they reach the editor, and therefore in the long run this will speed the system.

A Data Area Editorial Board is being constituted to read and comment on this document. This follows the scheme mentioned in several GFSG meetings in
passing.

I will ask them to turn it around quickly in this instance.

I realise this breaks the GFSG 2 week period, but i beg licence in this case, and i believe the relevant chair wont object.

  Comment:
I have now read this through.

Its subject is of course way out of my domain, so i am only at best understanding some of the meaning via inference.

My thoughts are these

(i) I can certainly understand the worries that the document is so dense, and steeped in a particular language (preservation community) that the
average GGF reader will be unable to understand it in any detail. However that in itself isnt a reaosn not to publish it, as we need to look at the
history.

(ii) It is extremely well written, and reeks of competence. I can also say thar I have always been very impressed with the professional attitude of
Reagan, and the way he stuck to exactly what the RG was supposed to do, and ran very focused meetings.

(iii) If we wanted to object to the subject matter, then formally we should have done this at the time of formation of the group. Of course in
practice PA was a very early group formed long before the gGF had evolved the procedures we have today.

(iv) Hence I believe that to first order we should accept that we are where we are on this one - ????

(v) The key for the future is to ensure some form of external (to the Group) overview of document preparation before it reaches the editor. I admit
to not thinking along these lines leading up to the submission of this doc.

Hence in any case i am going to ask for some reviewers within Data Area as a "test case" for this. If I can make this go quickly we will have further
 comment before it goea public.

you will see this in some following emails.

  Comment:
This draft is (per author discussion) aimed at the archive community with the purpose of showing how grid technologies apply to archive requirements.
However, the paper is extremely dense and assumes deep a priori knowledge about archive concepts and terms. It is possible this paper is a
reasonable candidate for INFO type, however the DATA ADs have been asked to review and comment prior to further editor action.

Re category I'll take a look... you are correct that a REC track document would not come from a RG. Also from your description this does not sound
like a REC, though could potentially be a CP.

If you can update this artifact by attaching an editable file (e.g. DOC or RTF) that would allow me to take the next step beyond helping to categorize
 it.

Uhm, sorry, I have seen just after sending that only ASCII, RTF and DOC are good for submission. I don't want to submit again - that would probably
create more mess. However, a DOC version is on http://www.zib.de/ggf/data/pa/meetings-ggf8.html

Thanks, Andre.
