I'm closing this tracker item, at least for now, since GFD.030 has been published for months. Based on the information in the tracker, it seems we're
awaiting submission of a version 2 primer, which will go through a separate document review process. If this is not the intent, please enter
updated information here and we can move the tracker to wherever it belongs.

I accidentally made this document GFD.030 but it was supposed to be GFD.031. GFD.030 is being saved for a different OGSA document per Charlie Catlett.

Note that GFD.030 and GFD.031 in this tracker are identical. We're waiting for another document that will become GFD.030.

Folks,

Tim Banks has addressed all the issues raised during public comment. I think we are ready for press.

One question he has is:

... Also, the Really-Really-Final version will need
changes to the document name in the page headers (beware, there are two
different headers - first page and 'others') once the document number has
been assigned, but I'm sure you'll tell me if more tinkering is needed.
However, I'm on holiday from Friday 27th until Monday 6th Sept.

Do you take care of this as a final step, or do wee need to get numbers etc from you first?

Because v2 is so nearly ready, it would make the most sense to upload v2 to this tracker item rather than move v1 forward. I am changing the state of
this item, then, to "pending info from authors" while we wait for v2 to become available.

Andrew asked me to have a look at the Primer and add some comments. Apologies if these are comments made by others that are still pending.

The document is actually in great shape and so all I have to add are small fixes.

1. last sentence at the bottom of page 8 (section 2.2) seems to be missing a clause. Perhaps add "and/or other needed resources".

2. in figure 2-1, should arrow 3 ("Monitor Progress, Retrieve Results") have an arrowhead at both ends? This might be appropriate to indicate that
progress reports might be push or pull.

3. section 5.4.2 (near top of page 27 for me) there should be some space between the paragraph ending with "application" and the one starting with "
The OGSI Specification" in order to keep consistent formatting throughout.

4. section 5.4.3 (first sentence) - must add "from" so that the sentence reads "... passed to or returned from ...". I think Steve also caught this.

5. section 12.1 (2nd sentence) - must add "a" so that the sentence reads "Such a Grid Service (also called a source)..."

  Comment:
I recently tried to view the OGSI Primer using Word 2000 on a PC running Windows 2000. Word claimed it encountered an 'Application Error: The
instruction at "0x300aaa07" referenced memory at "0x04288000". The memory could not be "read".' So I clicked on OK to terminate the program (i.e.,
Word).

Being stubborn, I tried an alternative approach. I downloaded the doc file (it occupies 1,371,136 bytes) and then tried opening it with Word locally
and got the same result.

Rising to this mounting challenge, I opened the downloaded file using WordPad, which kinda worked but the formatting, hyperlinks, pagination, etc got
messed up. I then saved it from within WordPad as a Word 6.0 doc file. Next I opened this newly saved Word 6.0 doc file using Word 2000 - which sorta
worked - and then saved it as a Word 2000 doc file. Finally I opened this last doc file using Word 2000 and it looked somewhat better but the
hyperlinks still didn't work and the diagrams were all much too large and for many of them, their right hand portions fell off the page and were not
visible.

I appreciate that there may be a problem with my copy of Word 2000 (I don't really believe this because all my other doc files work fine - but I felt
that I should at least appear to allow this possibility) but could you check to make sure that your version of Word can still read your document.
Thanks in advance.

  Comment:
I have read the document and have the following comments:

1. I believe it is at the correct level in terms of giving users an overview of OGSI. It also has useful information for implementers in the latter
chapters.

2. I have the following editorial comments (note that some are 'nits'):

Section 2.1 Definition of Grid computing: I would use "utilized" instead of exploited.
Section 2.2, last sentence on page 8 does not make sense. Perhaps missing something between CPUs and secondary storage.
Section 2.5.1 second paragraph has a misplace "a" prior to Service-Oriented Architectures
Section 4.2 - End of section. Is the statement about updating OGSI when WSDL 1.2 still true? Wouldn't this be included in an updated version of this
 document?
Section 5.4.3 - first sentence - "returned <from>"
Section 5.5.3 - first bullet assumes the reader knows what "the report" is; it's introduced later in the section
Section 5.7 - Bottom of page 34, Figure should be 5.3 not 5.4
Section 6.1.4 - Extra comma not needed after "consistent" in next to last paragraph. Also, is the example for
"approximateCounter" missing?
Section 7.3 - "GSH" reference should be associated with the first reference to Grid Service Handle in the sentence.
Section 9.2.2 - Second paragraph has a "a the" in the first sentence
Section 10 - OGSA was thrown in without any description of the relationship between OGSA and OGSI. Perhaps a single sentence to marry the two might be
 useful?
Section 12.3.2 - Top of page 65, typo valuesof

Excellent document.

Thanks, Steve Crumb
