Comments on "Entity" and "Intermediary"
The OGSA Glossary is well written and quite clear. An excellent piece of work that deserves to be published by OGF.

I have two small, and I emphasize small, areas of comment/concern.

Entity/Identity. An entity is defined as "Any nameable thing." This implies that to be an entity in the OGSA
environment the thing must have a name. Since the definition of "name" is very general (especially the "address"
component of it), it is hard to say that this is wrong. but it certainly is a bit misleading. When one looks at the
definition of identity ("An attribute, such as a name, that allows one entity to be distinguished from all others.".
This seems to reinforce the point by implying that an entity only needs to have an identity and that the identity might
be something other than a name.

Intermediary. The definition of intermediary is written in terms of message passing. Since the definition of message
is very general, this is okay. However, the definitions of message broker and message service are written in terms of
intermediary. So, this appears to be a bit circular. In practice, a message broker/service is all about message
passing in a particular context - passing messages over a communication network. Perhaps these definitions should be
tweaked to reflect that.
Re: Comments on "Entity" and "Intermediary"
Hi Allen, thanks for your comments - much appreciated. We discussed both these items on the November 19th, 2007 OGSA
telecon, with the following results:

For entity & identity we decided that this should be addressed first in the Architecture document, with any changes to be reflected in the Glossary at that time. So I've submitted a new tracker for the Architecture document - we don't yet have a schedule for a new version, but this guarantees that it won't be overlooked.

For the point about "intermediary" I took a close look, and we discussed it on the call, but we didn't really see much of an issue - the way the definitions are written doesn't seem to me to be circular. If you substitute the definition for intermediary in place of the word in "message broker" it's fine; if you do the same for "messaging service" you get a lot of redundancy but it doesn't recurse.

Can you make a suggestion as to how you think it should be changed? Otherwise I'll try to do a little wordsmithing here
anyway, as I do see some minor issues.

Thanks,

- Jem
Re: Comments on "Entity" and "Intermediary"
Allen,

As you know all the comments you raise here have now been addressed with changes to the definitions and the addition of
trackers to be addressed in the next revision of the OGSA Architecture document. The trackers are artf6087 and artf6094
.

Thanks for your help!

- Jem
