Notes

Review actions from last meeting

  • NOT COMPLETE All: Review NMC-Base_TODO and NMC-MA_TODO, see if you have an assignment, and start working.
    • Not a lot of progress
  • NOT COMPLETE Freek & Inder: Review and correct RFC 2119 words.
    • Inder: Has a print out document with hand written notes. Will coordinate with Freek closely. Will be making SVN edits soon after.
  • NOT COMPLETE Roman: Identify who in Gn3 should be notified/involved regarding our attempts to lock down the protocol
    • Besides the 'standards group' in GN3, no one in particular comes to mind. A general announcement to pS Dev/pSPS Dev will work fine.
  • NOT COMPLETE Jason: Mail the people from Gn3 and pSPS regarding the locking down of the protocol
    • Jason will make the announcement once we have a better idea of what we are locking down and why we are doing it. Probably after OGF (once the base document is further along)
  • COMPLETE Jason: Keep up the hunt for the OGF 28 agenda
  • COMPLETE Jason: Spur the result code discussion on Result Codes

Result Codes Verdict

  • Proposal 1:
    • 0 Votes in favor
    • 8 Votes against
    • 0 Votes maybe
  • Proposal 2:
    • 0 Votes in favor
    • 2 Votes against
    • 6 Votes maybe
  • Proposal 3:
    • 7 Votes in favor
    • 0 Votes against
    • 1 Votes maybe

Discussion centered on next step. Roman thinks we should write up some better examples (starting with what Slawek started), iterate between us, then take back to pS-Dev. Jason/Aaron/Jeff will contribute after Slawek and Roman gets things started.

Transport Medium Discussion

See emails from 2/16 on "Transport protocol". Synopsis from email on the subject of transport medium:

  • Freek: we don't specify what NMC should transfer XML over. pS services appear to use SOAP over HTTP.
  • Martin: we don't say it, and its true we use that particular kind (SOAP over HTTP), but anything can be used
  • Jason: don't see why we need to say anything because this is an implementation detail - not something that is going to cause changes in the XML protocol

2/18 mails:

  • Michael: Approach may be similar to SAML, XML only in the documents not caring much about transport
  • Freek: Would be fine with the base being transport agnostic. These details (transport medium, ports are found via the LS) are still very important
  • Jason: Re-iterating that implementation details are best handled by the implementation.
  • Roman: Do not place the specifics of WS stuff in the base or even extensions (MA etc). Maybe need a 3rd type of document for implementations.

Synopsis from email on the subject of server ports:

  • Freek: Should we be recommending ports to run services on
  • Martin: There are conventions we may provide as informative text
  • Aaron: Not really conventions - people pick things (or use what we recommend in the software release). Should instruct people to just look in the information services
  • Jason: This group should not be recommending ports for implementation level details

On the call Roman stated that he would prefer we left details like transport for the WS out of the base completely. They may not belong in extensions too. Inder agrees and gave an example from NSI: Messages in one document, architecture in another. Michael agrees the base as it currently stands is not the right place, but the information is important. Does it belong in the NMC umbrella? Hard to say. Something to talk about in the future. Aaron notes he is fine with splitting it out. There was no discussion on ports, the proposal in the email thread (use the LS) is fine for all.

Plans for next 3-4 Weeks

Jason will be doing a LOT of editing. If people have outstanding changes to SVN, please start committing on a very regular basis. Roman will focus on the examples, especially chaining. Michael had some ideas but didnt commit them yet. Will find a spot for them in svn.
