Project: OGF SAGA Resource-API

Background

One of the main most significant differences between Grids and Clouds are their approach to resource management: while grids mostly host long running resources whose lifetimes are generally independent of applications, clouds rather provide resources dynamically, and thus tie resource lifetime to application lifetime. The SAGA API as defined in GFD.90 covers grid resource aspects reasonably well, but does not yet cover the semantic scope of resource discovery and utilization in clouds. Various approaches for broadening SAGA's scope in that respect exist, but none is, as of yet, mature enough to be implemented.

Project Goals

An API specification is to be drafted which addresses the basic semantic scope of IaaS cloud resource management, in sync with the capabilities exposed by OCCI and the AWS-API. A prototype implementation of that API, within the SAGA-C++ framework, should bind to one of the OCCI implementations to provide a proof of concept.

Project Description

Specification and prototype implementation of a SAGA Resource API extension as described above.

Project Requirements

Advanced C++ and Unix programming skills. Knowledge of IaaS systems if a big advantage, as is familiarity with OCCI.
