The Open Grid Forum (OGF) is a community of users, developers, and vendors leading the global standardization effort for grid and cloud computing. The OGF community consists of thousands of individuals in industry and research, representing over 400 organizations in more than 50 countries. The work of OGF is carried out through community-initiated working groups, which develop standards and specifications in cooperation with other leading standards organizations, software vendors, and users. OGF is funded through its organizational members, including technology companies and academic and government research institutions.

GSOC 2011 gives us a chance to improve the adoption level and relevance of standardization documents through new or updated implementations made available for public. OGF standards are typically expected to become part of open source or commercial grid and cloud systems. This is mainly driven by the commitment of the according development groups, which is especially critical for non-commercial systems (e.g. Condor) due to their restricted resources. GSOC 2011 allows as attracting additional developer resources test suites, reference or language binding implementations. Software development in this setup has the chance to be more product-agnostic. In contrast to many other standardization bodies, OGF is also a community-driven effort. GSOC allows us to attract new students for participating in the OGF working groups, which fosters the standardization work itself, and allows the students to get in touch with people from different universities and software companies.
