Grid Interoperation Now Community Group (GIN-CG)
Group Information
Group Type: Community Group
Group Chair(s): Laurence Field, Morris Riedel

Group Description
The purpose of this group is to coordinate a set of interoperation efforts among production Grids interested in interoperating in support of applications that require resources in multiple Grids.

Group Focus and Scope
The focus of this group is to plan and implement interoperation on specific, well defined topics via coordinated efforts providing feedback to standardization groups and software providers. Other topics may be discussed in more loosely coordinated discussion groups.

The scope of the group is to pursue interoperation on 6-8 month horizons using solutions for which there are working implementations available, wherever possible using standards. Links with appropriate standards groups and the OGF Technical Strategy Committee will be established and feedback to these groups given; links with software providers will be established in a similar manner.

The results of the GIN work is expected to lead to a more seamless usage of different Grid infrastructures by applications, however, GIN does not provide resources or support application porting. This is subject to individual negotiation with the application group and the targeted Grid infrastructures.

New additional GIN Co-Chair - GIN-CG
Dear GIN team,

It's my pleasure to announce that...

Laurence Field

... has been approved as the new additional GIN co-chair. I just got the confirmation for that.

Let's wish him all possible success (and time) for this position.

Actually, GIN has now many tracks to follow-up and thus the new co-chair support is certainly very valuable to our group.

Your co-chair,
Morris

GIN Demonstrations at Supercomputing 2008 - GIN-CG
I talked to many GIN members that are already preparing several demonstrations of interoperability use cases for the Supercomputing 2008 Conference in Austin, Texas, USA.

In order to organize and prepare OGF announcement flyers and to get an overview where demonstrations can be seen, I created a wiki page like last year:

http://forge.gridforum.org/sf/wiki/do/viewPage/projects.gin/wiki/GINSuperComputing2008

I would like to ask any GIN members that would like to demonstrate something int the context of interop* to edit this wiki page and put in your information. Please keep the structure as is in order to retain the overview.

Thank you very much!

Your co-chair,
Morris

GIN Camera-ready Paper for OGF Special Journal Issue Submitted - GIN-CG
The camera-ready version of our GIN Journal paper has been submitted to the OGF Special Issue for publication.

Because of copyrights I don't want to put it online in the moment - so people that would like to have the camera-ready version before it is actually published please send this reqest to Morris (m.riedel@fz-juelich.de)

I would like to thank all GIN members for their input and especially the native english reviewer. ;-)

Take care,
Morris

GIN in Theory and Practice - GIN-CG
Some claim our efforts are not academic enough because too much practical work! Others claim our efforts are too practical without any thoughts on theoretical backgrounds, models, concepts, or paradigms. Also, many think there is a lack of applications using interoperability or interoperation for e-science.

So one of the ideas in this context is to establish a publication list on the GIN wiki:

„Interoperability/Interoperation in Theory and Practice“ http://forge.gridforum.org/sf/wiki/do/viewPage/projects.gin/wiki/Pubinterop

So if you know publications in the field of interoperability or interoperation please add them to this list!

Thank you very much for your help in enhancing this publication list and thus providing references to our work in the greater GIN context!

GIN @ OGF24: GIN - Session II - Security Challenges in World-wide Interop Activities - GIN-CG
The second session at OGF24 will be a working session about the specific topic "contrained/restricted delegation" with security expoerts of OGF (i.e. David Groep et al.):

Wednesday, September 17
4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
GIN-CG - Session II: Security Challenges in World-wide Interop Activities (90 mins)
Morris Riedel, Erwin Laure
(GIN-CG) Group Discussion
Location: Breakthrough

More information and agenda can be found at the OGF session site:

http://www.ogf.org/gf/event_schedule/index.php?id=1409

If you are in Singapore and have interest in security please make sure to participate in our GIN session.

GIN @ OGF24: GIN - Session I - Status of World-wide Interop Activities - GIN-CG
The first session at OGF24 will provide information of numerous interop activities, so please make sure if you are at Singapore to join our session:

Wednesday, September 17
2:15 pm - 3:45 pm
GIN-CG - Session I: Status of World-wide Interop Activities (90 mins)
Morris Riedel, Erwin Laure
(GIN-CG) Group Discussion
Location: Breakthrough

More information and agenda can be found at the OGF session site:

GIN @ OGF23: GIN Security Profile Discussions - GIN-CG
A requested session proposal about GIN Security Profile Discussions at OGF23 in Barcelona has been accepted:

Wednesday, June 4
2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
GIN: Security Profile (90 mins)
Erwin Laure, Morris Riedel, Thomas Soddemann
(GIN-CG) Group Discussion
Location: Montjuic

The fundamental goal of this session will be to take our experiences from production Grids into account and discuss how existing security specifications can be profiled to be used within production Grids. Technologies like X.509 or SAML for delegation will be reviewed as well as Security specifications of OGF.

OGF22 - GIN Specification Adoption Track Session - GIN-CG
OGF22 - GIN Specification Adoption Track Session

This session at OGF22 will basically describe which standards have been used in our interoperation/interoperability demonstrations and will provide hints where standards are necessary to facilitate interoperability. The major outcome of this session should be interesting discussions between e-Science/Grid infrastructures on the one hand and e-Science/Grid technologies on the other. In addition, we would like to invite certain representatives from standardization groups to provide them feedback of how their standards are actually used (or planned to be used) in production scenarios.

Date&Time&Location
Date: Tuesday, February 26
Time: 11:15 am - 12:45 pm
Room: Molly Pitcher
Duration: 90 mins

GIN Focussed Activity: Execution Environment Document - GIN-CG
A GIN focussed activity is a certain area of work that needs to be addressed to solve interoperation, but is typically not suitable to create an own OGF group for this challenge. The execution environment document is such a focussed activity.

The execution document presents a recommendation for a middleware-independent execution environment that a Grid job can find on every execution host. The document covers three main areas, environment variables, boot strapping environments and publishing application environments.

An early draft was compiled by Laurence Field and is available in GridForge:

http://forge.gridforum.org/sf/docman/do/listDocuments/projects.gin/docman.root.current_drafts.execution_environment

If you have any comments or contributions, please use the GIN lists for this.

GIN Paper for OGF Special Journal Issue - GIN-CG
The most of you know that Morris and some others from the group have worked on a paper the last months planed for a submission to the OGF Special Journal Issue.

While many different extensions/deadlines have been around, the official Website now indicates...

March 15, 2008

... as the deadline for submit.

Morris will provide a draft of this paper early in February so that the group can make comments in February until OGF22 for discussions. After this I will compile with the chairs the final draft, including discussed material at OGF22.

Grid Interoperation Now (GIN): Specification Adoptions & Discussions (90
mins)

The plan for the content of this session is to highlight/debrief our supercomputing efforts (2006+2007) with a major focus on where we have used standards (and/or where suitable standards are still missing).

In the next weeks we will work on a more detailed agenda, so if there are ideas for the session in this context write your ideas to the GIN list!
